How to wear distressed clothing without looking sloppy
InkPickMe Admin
Washed effects are everywhere in streetwear: distressed hoodies, washed pants, and faded black t-shirts. When worn well, they give an outfit a vintage, raw look. When overdone, they can look sloppy. Here’s how to find the right balance.
Washed, vintage wash, snow wash: what’s the difference?
- Washed: the fabric is washed after dyeing to soften the color. Black fades toward charcoal, giving it a slightly worn look.
- Vintage wash: a more pronounced washed effect that mimics a garment worn for years, with variations along the seams and folds.
- Snow wash: a marbled effect with lighter areas on a dark background, as if the fabric had been covered in snow.
Each washed piece is slightly different from the others: that’s part of its charm.
Rule #1: one washed piece, the rest solid
To start, wear a single washed piece with solid, crisp items. For example, wear the snow wash zip-up hoodie open over a boxy black t-shirt, with solid black pants. The washed effect becomes the focal point of the outfit.
Rule #2: a full washed look, yes, but coordinate it
A full washed look works really well if it’s styled as a coordinated set: the same color family and the same type of wash. The cropped vintage washed fleece hoodie and the matching flared fleece pants are designed to be worn together. The same goes for the cropped washed zip-up hoodie and the washed double-waist pants.
Rule #3: add structure
Washed effects can look sloppy when everything is loose and undefined. Add structure: a cap, clean sneakers, or a contrast in volume, such as a cropped top and wide-leg pants. Washed cargo pants with prominent pockets add structure while staying true to the look.
Rule #4: stick to dark tones
Washed black, charcoal, coffee, gray: these tones go well together and keep an outfit cohesive. If you add a color, reserve it for a single detail, like the red 23 on our Signature pieces.
Washed pieces to have
- Oversized washed t-shirt “Often imitated, never equaled”: raw finishes and distressed typography.
- Snow wash zip-up hoodie: a washed black piece to layer.
- Vintage double-belt pants: a washed basic, available in 5 colors.
- Snow wash drawstring pants: straight, wide-leg fit, 100% cotton.
- Clean vintage jeans: relaxed fit, washed effect.
How to care for washed pieces
To preserve the vintage effect without wearing it out too quickly: wash your pieces at 30°C on a gentle cycle, inside out, with similar colors. Avoid high-temperature tumble drying, and never iron over a print.
In summary
Start with one washed piece and the rest solid, then move on to coordinated sets when you’re more comfortable. Stick to dark tones and add a little structure: the washed effect will become the signature of your outfit.
